Augusta, Marietta big winners in 2017 GSWA Contest


The Augusta Chronicle and Marietta Daily Journal were the big winners in the annual Georgia Sports Writers Association’s writing and editing contest announced Sunday.

Augusta Chronicle sports editor John Boyette won the Furman Bisher Sweepstakes Award for best story and the newspaper took first for best sports section, best Sunday sports section and best special section in the Division I category for newspapers with circulation of 50,000-plus.

The Marietta Daily Journal swept the three best section categories in Division II and sports editor John Bednarowski won for best columnist and best news story on deadline. The Gwinnett Daily Post won four individual awards, two by Paul Thomas. The Division II Sweepstakes Award was won by former Athens Banner Herald sports editor Fletcher Page.

The Division III writing contest for non-daily newspapers was dominated by the Douglas County Sentinel and the Troup County News. The Sentinel won by best section and best special section and sports editor Derrick Mahone won for best column. Chris Fernsler of Troup County won for best event, best feature and best new story.

The contest was judged by Vahe Gregorian of the Kansas City Star, former Jackson Clarion Ledger sports editor Rick Cleveland, Tom Murphy of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, and Lee Feinswong, a former sports writer with the Winston-Salem Journal and Baton Rouge Advocate.
