Latest GSWA football rankings show new No. 1 in Class A

When it comes to top-ranked teams in this week’s Georgia Sportswriters Association poll, most squads simply reinforced their places at the top, or near the top, of their respective classifications.

But the Irwin County Indians jumped from fourth to first in the Class A, public-private combined rankings, thanks to a sound 21-3 win over previous No. 1 Clinch County this past Friday.

It was the only No. 1 ranking that changed hands in the seven-classification rankings. Irwin’s move up was also one of the biggest overall jumps any team from any classification made in this week’s ratings.

In Class AAAAAAA Colquitt County sustained its top spot, while Walton and Grayson swapped No. 3 and No. 2 rankings, possibly due to Grayson’s 21-16 squeaker win over Westlake. The Class AAAAAAA’s top spot will likely be up for grabs again as the Rams will host Colquitt Friday at 7:30 p.m.

The top three teams in Class AAAAAA stayed the same for the second week in a row, as Lee County, Coffee and Harrison maintained their Nos 1, 2 and 3 rankings respectively. Sequoyah took a large leap, however, from 10th to 5th after scoring a 38-7 victory over Campbell one week after entering the top 10 With a resounding 42-14 rout of Dalton.

The Chiefs will take that momentum into a bye week before having another opportunity to prove themselves when they travel to face fourth ranked Creekview on September 28.
